Historically, political realignment has occurred when groups of voters change their affiliation to a new political party or candidate, especially around presidential and midterm elections. Yet the period between 1852 and 1860 is crucial here, for it saw the last time a major political party collapsed (the Whig Party in 1854) and the dissolution of another political party (the Democratic Party in 1860). The 1924 Democratic Party famously went through 103 ballots before agreeing on a compromise candidate, John W. Davis of West Virginia. Of course, party realignment is a tricky thing since we only come to know that it has happened in hindsight. A failure to reach a majority consensus signals the doom of an American political party.

(AP) — The endangered red wolf can survive in the wild, but only with “significant additional management intervention,” according to a long-awaited population viability analysis released Friday. It calls for spending nearly $328 million over the next 50 years to get the red wolf off the endangered species list. The red wolf once roamed from central Texas to southern Iowa and as far east as Long Island, New York. “We have not yet identified locations for establishing new Red Wolf populations,” the report said. But the viability study cautioned that such releases be done very carefully, so as not to reduce the genetic diversity within the captive-bred population.

Two firefighters died while working to extinguish a raging fire Wednesday aboard an Italian cargo ship that was loading automobiles at Port Newark in New Jersey, the authorities said. The firefighters “made an attempt to extinguish the fire and, because of the intense heat, they got pushed back out of the area where the initial fire was,” Chief Rufus Jackson of the Newark Fire Department said in a news conference early Thursday.
